Information
Sulbactam + Ampicillin is a combination antibiotic that pairs a beta-lactamase inhibitor (sulbactam) with a broad-spectrum penicillin (ampicillin).
- Ampicillin works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death.
- Sulbactam protects ampicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, thereby extending its spectrum of activity.
This combination is commonly used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, and intra-abdominal infections, especially when resistant organisms are suspected. It is typically administered by injection in hospital settings.
